This study was conducted for the following three purposes : (1) to understand the current practice of solfege instructions outside school, (2) to examine Solfege instructors' perceptions of their students, and (3) to pry and grasp the current state of Solfege instructions provided to junior-high and high school students whose future goals were to become music experts.
Analyses of survey revealed the following. First, Solfege instructions are given once a week during a piano lesson. Second, music dictation, sight singing, and musical grammar/mapping strategies are frequently covered. Third, instructors infer that the purpose of their students taking Solfege is to pass the college entrance examinations. Fourth, instructors believe the goal of Solfege instruction to be the mastery of basic skills (e. g., perception of beat and rhythm, sight-reading skills). Finally, more than half of instructors evaluate their current practice negatively.
