Since clipping damage to 5 species of broadleaf tree seedlings planted in cutover areas (6 plots of 14×14 m and 18 plots of 7×7 m) of a 25-year-old Japanese cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa plantation had been brought about by the Japanese hare Lepus brachyurus, two kinds of protectors were tested. The woven plastic netting protectors scarcely prevented the hare damage as a whole although a little effective partly. On the other hand, the woven wire netting protectors had the powerful effect of preventing. The material cost and labor for the woven wire netting protector were ca. 7.6 (607 yen/one protector) and 2 times as much as those for the woven plastic netting one, respectively. The woven wire netting protector is one of useful methods for effective and continuous protection of the seedling against the hare-damage, although the cost is very expensive.
We have tried to improve equipments for tracing wild animal's behaviour, especially hare' s one, by telemetric tracing system with 45 multiple antennas. The 45 multiple antennas for finding location of the hare are set in a square zone of breeding enclosure of Niigata university. We have improve the system for tracing two hare's behaviour at the same time. We got 672 data through 2766 times' experiments between 16:40 p.m. and 15:11 p.m. on September 28-29, in 1988. The result is that it takes more than 0.5 voltage in order to make experiments under natural condition of breeding enclosure.
