Objective: This study aimed to investigate the physical characteristics of older adults community resident participants at local events and “Kayoinoba” community gathering places.
Methods: This study included 55 older adult participants at local events (local event group) and 180 older adult participants at the “Kayoinoba” places (Kayoinoba group). The frailty screening index, grip strength, five-time sit-to-stand test, skeletal mass index, sarcopenia diagnostic criteria, and dietary variety scores were measured. Furthermore, statistical analysis was conducted using a chi-square test to determine the differences in the physical characteristics of individuals in the local event and Kayoinoba groups.
Results: The local event group exhibited higher proportions of early older adult participants, males, and robust individuals (based on frailty assessment), high nutrient intake, and high percentage of individuals with grip strength above the threshold. Compared to the local event group, Kayoinoba group exhibited higher proportions of late older adult participants, females, and pre-frail and frail individuals (based on frailty assessment), higher incidence of dynapenia, and higher percentage of individuals with grip strength below the threshold.
Conclusion: Overall, the local event group predominantly consisted of early older adult males with a good health status, whereas the Kayoinoba group predominantly consisted of late older adult females with a poor health status.
