A pulsed current hot pressing (PCHP) technique was used to prepare Ti/Ti-aluminides laminate composites. Microstructure of the composite produced was an alternatively-laminated structure composed of Ti and Ti-aluminides. Tensile tests carried out for the composites at room temperature revealed that the mechanical properties of the composites changed by altering the thickness of the Al foils used. The tensile strength and the elongation of the composite produced from 0.04-mm-thick Ti and 0.012-mm-thick Al foils attained to about 700MPa and 3.5%, respectively. These mechanical properties of the composite produced by PCHP were higher than those by conventional vacuum hot pressing techniques. Microstructural observations of fractured specimens showed that the Ti layers effectively bridged numerous cracks occurred in the Ti-aluminides.

This paper describes recent development of intelligent materials and structure. Based omano-technologies related to magnetic field, electron charging, dangling bond, point defects, atomic distance, proton and adsorption, smart and intelligent materials with three intelligent principle functions of power, sight and reliability have beensuccessfully developed. To obtain high power, bimorph actuators operated by hydrogen gas and magnetic field were developed. High resistance to noise was found in giant magnetostrictive Fe-Pd alloy film. Hybrid magnet and their mounted motor also obtained high power. Inorganic materials with high transparency (sight function), sterilization and high strength wereobtained by electron beam irradiation. As reliability functions, fatigue limit prediction method for PZT ceramics, high yielding process for 10GPa class carbon fiber and homogenization with properties controlling for amorphous materials were developed.

The technological demand for developing multifunctional, intelligent materials and systems are growing day by day. In the very near future, for establishing a more efficient, comfortable human life and society, the combination between intelligent material/devices (IMD) and information technology (IT) will be inevitably occurred from the view point of transference of human works (i. e. sensing, processing, effecting function) into active/intelligent devices by utilizing remote telecommunication. Harmonic material/device design, technological importance of combination intelligent/IT concept and several preliminary researches to realize this approach are overviewed. New additional strategy to "Man/Material Interface" becomes necessary to develop this field.

Biological systems adapted and perfected the design and functioning of their structures during thousands of years of evolution in a changing and increasingly more complex, competitive and challenging world. It is therefore smart in itself to study, understand and adopt nature's time-tested principles and mechanisms to the design of adaptive structures and intelligent materials. Here we focus on autonomous and locally controlled responses, which do not require or the remote control by a central nervous system. We look at three kinds of mechanisms. First, the principles of touch and light sensing in plants and single-celled algae will be examined for their applicability to trigger, modify and control actuation mechanisms. Second, the study of various actuators in plants provides a wide set of alternative choices to create novel, energy-conservative actuation mechanisms in intelligent materials. Third, the comparison of biological, filament-based muscles and artificial, polymer gel-based actuators provides the means to develop and test alternative explanations of the mechanics of muscle contraction and to find the causes or conditions causing the superior speed in natural systems.
