Purpose: The purpose of this study was to do a feasibility study on a microstrip transmission line (MS) RF coil for a positron emission tomography (PET) insert in a 7 Tesla human MRI system. The proposed MS coil integrated the RF shield of the PET detector as the ground conductor of the coil. We called the integrated module “MS PET coil.”

Methods: A single-channel MS PET coil was developed with an integrated RF-shielded PET detector module. For comparison, we also studied a conventional MS coil with a single-layer ground conductor. A lutetium fine silicate (LFS) scintillation crystal block (14 × 14 × 4-layer) with a silicon photomultiplier (Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., Shizuoka, Japan) and a front-end readout circuit board were mounted inside the shield cage of the MS PET coil. The MS PET coil was studied with and without PET detectors. All three coil configurations were studied with a homogeneous phantom in a 7T MRI system (Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany). PET data measurements were conducted using a Cesium-137 radiation point source.

Results: The MR images were similar for the MS coil and the empty MS PET coil, as well as for the cases of MS PET coil with and without PET measurements. Compared to the empty MS PET coil (without PET detector and cable RF shield), decreases in SNR, increases in image noise and RF power, and a slight decrease in resonance frequency were seen for the case of the MS PET coil with the detector and cable shield. Differences in the PET energy histograms or in the crystal identification maps with and without MRI measurements were negligible.

Conclusions: Both the MRI and PET performances of the MS PET coil showed responses that matched the MS coil responses. The performance variations of MRI data with and without PET measurement and PET data with and without MR imaging were negligible.

Purpose: Hemodynamics is important in the initiation, growth, and rupture of intracranial aneurysms. Since intracranial aneurysms are small, a high-field MR system with high spatial resolution and high SNR is desirable for this hemodynamic analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the accuracy of MR fluid dynamic (MRFD) results based on 3D phase-contrast MR (3D PC MR, non-electrocardiogram[ECG]-gated 4D Flow MRI) data from a human cerebrovascular phantom and human healthy subjects obtained by a 7T MR system was superior to those by a 3T MR system.

Methods: 3D PC MR and 3D time of flight MR angiography (3D TOF MRA) imaging were performed on a 3T MR system and a 7T MR system for a human cerebrovascular phantom and 10 healthy human subjects, and MRFD analysis was performed using these data. The MRFD results from each MR system were then compared with the following items based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results: 3D velocity vector field; correlation coefficient (R), angular similarity index (ASI), and magnitude similarity index (MSI) of blood flow velocity vectors.

Results: In the MRFD results of 3D velocity vectors of the cerebrovascular phantom, noise-like vectors were observed near the vascular wall on the 3T MR system, but no noise was observed on the 7T MR system, showing results similar to those of CFD. In the MRFD results of the cerebrovascular phantom and healthy subjects, the correlation coefficients R, ASI, and MSI of the 7T MR system were higher than those of the 3T MR system, and ASI and MSI of healthy human subjects were significantly different between the two systems.

Conclusions: The accuracy of high spatial resolution MRFD using the 7T MR system exceeded that of the 3T MR system.

Recent high-performance gradient coils are fabricated mainly at the expense of spatial linearity. In this study, we measured the spatial nonlinearity of the magnetic field generated by the gradient coils of two MRI systems with high-performance gradient coils. The nonlinearity of the gradient fields was measured using 3D gradient echo sequences and a spherical phantom with a built-in lattice structure. The spatial variation of the gradient field was approximated to the 3rd order polynomials. The coefficients of the polynomials were calculated using the steepest descent method. The geometric distortion of the acquired 3D MR images was corrected using the polynomials and compared with the 3D images corrected using the harmonic functions provided by the MRI venders. As a result, it was found that the nonlinearity correction formulae provided by the vendors were insufficient and needed to be verified or corrected using a geometric phantom such as used in this study.

Clinical MRI systems have continually improved over the years since their introduction in the 1980s. In MRI technical development, the developments in each MRI system component, including data acquisition, image reconstruction, and hardware systems, have impacted the others. Progress in each component has induced new technology development opportunities in other components. New technologies outside of the MRI field, for example, computer science, data processing, and semiconductors, have been immediately incorporated into MRI development, which resulted in innovative applications. With high performance computing and MR technology innovations, MRI can now provide large volumes of functional and anatomical image datasets, which are important tools in various research fields. MRI systems are now combined with other modalities, such as positron emission tomography (PET) or therapeutic devices. These hybrid systems provide additional capabilities.

In this review, MRI advances in the last two decades will be considered. We will discuss the progress of MRI systems, the enabling technology, established applications, current trends, and the future outlook.

Purpose: To compare the performance of a 12-channel flexible head coil (HFC12) with commercial 16-channel (HRC16) and 24-channel (HRC24) rigid coils.

Methods: The phantom study was performed on a 1.5 T MR scanner with HFC12, HRC16, and HRC24. The SNR and noise correlation matrix of T1WI, T2WI, and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) were measured. The SNR profiles were created according to the SNR. In addition, 1/g-factors were calculated in different acceleration directions. In the in vivo study, T1WI, T2WI, and DWI were performed in one healthy volunteer with three different coils. The SNR and noise correlation matrix were measured.

Results: In the phantom study and in vivo study, the SNR of HFC12 in the transverse, sagittal, and coronal planes was the highest, followed by HRC24, and that of HRC16 was the lowest. The SNR profiles showed that the SNR at the edge of HFC12 was the highest. The mean value of the noise correlation matrix of HFC12 was the highest. The 1/g-factor results showed that HFC12 obtained the best acceleration ability in the head–foot acceleration direction when the reduction factor was set to two. The SNR of HFC12 in most cortices was significantly higher than that of HRC16 and HRC24, except in the occipital cortex. The SNR of HRC24 in the occipital cortex was higher than that of HFC12.

Conclusion: The SNR of HFC12 in T1WI, T2WI, and DWI was better than that of the HRC24 and HFC16. The SNR of HFC12 in the cortex was significantly higher than that of the commercial rigid head coil, except in the occipital cortex.

²³Na-MRI provides information on Na⁺ content, and its application in the medical field has been highly anticipated. However, for existing clinical ¹H-MRI systems, its implementation requires an additional broadband RF transmitter, dedicated transceivers, and RF coils for Na⁺ imaging. However, a standard medical MRI system cannot often be modified to perform ²³Na imaging. We have developed an add-on crossband RF repeater system that enables ²³Na-MRI simply by inserting it into the magnet bore of an existing ¹H MRI. The three axis gradient fields controlled by the ¹H-MRI system were directly used for ²³Na imaging without any deformation. A crossband repeater is a common technique used for amateur radio. This concept was proven by a saline solution phantom and in vivo mouse experiments. This add-on RF platform is applicable to medical ¹H MRI systems and can enhance the application of ²³Na-MRI in clinical usage.

We have developed a new device, consisting of a 3-cm RF coil and an immobilizer, to acquire high-resolution MR images of the testis. With the approval of our institutional review board, we conducted an MRI study on a cohort of healthy volunteers to test this device. With the participants in the supine position, we placed the dedicated immobilizer and RF coil on the scrotum for typically no more than 3 min. Subsequently, T2-weighted images were acquired with an in-plane resolution of 117 µm using a 3-T MR scanner and the periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (PROPELLER) sequence. The total scan time ranged from 12 to 30 min (average 20 min). High-resolution MR images of the testis were acquired without deterioration by motion artifacts. Our results showed that the combined use of a small RF coil and an immobilizer is a feasible option for acquiring high-resolution MR images of the testis.

Portable MRI scanners, in which a permanent magnet with a low magnetic field is mounted on a small car, have enabled the performance of MRI examinations in various remote environments. Here, we have modified the portable MRI system to enable the early diagnosis of wrist sports injuries among tennis players. A RF probe specifically designed for the human wrist was developed, and a power supply scheme using a small generator was introduced. The portable MRI system was located at a tennis school and imaging of the wrists of junior tennis players was performed. To demonstrate clinical feasibility, image quality was assessed by a radiologist and clinical evaluations were performed. In most cases, the image quality was sufficient for diagnosis, and triangular fibrocartilage complex damage could be detected. The results indicated that the modified portable MRI system could be applied for an early diagnosis of wrist injuries.
