SynopsisPorous carbon materials made from agricultural residues, such as rice hull and soy hull, have been developed from a recycling point of view. The carbon materials are manufactured by impregnating a phenol resin into their natural porous structure and then carbonizing in nitrogen gas atmosphere at high temperature. The high strength glassy carbon is produced from the impregnated phenol resin as a reinforcing member. The porous carbon materials are used as powder filler for rubber and plastics or as a porous carbon plate after pressure forming or injection molding. The carbon material retains the unique carbon properties, such as lightweight, excellent friction properties and high electric conductivity. Therefore, for example, they are expected to use as a friction element in bearings, and as an electromagnetic wave shielding material for electronics and automobile industries.

SynopsisPhenolic acids existing abundantly in the plant cell wall and also produced easily by enzymatic reaction of aromatic amino acid were polymerized to create liquid-crystalline aromatic biopolyesters. Especially, the use of AB₂-type multifunctional monomers gave hyperbranched polyesters. Oriented films prepared by stretching the polyesters under the elevated temperature showed a high thermo-mechanical performance comparable with those of general engineering plastics.The annealing of the polyesters increased their softening temperature to be over 300^oC. The polyester resin was expected to apply to the heat-resistance biomaterials usable around automobile engines.
