“Mugaku Nikki (Unlearned Diary)” subtitled ‘A Farmer’s Hymn to Human Life and Nature’ is a memoir written by Ikeda Fukushige (1913-1990) after his near-death experience in December 1964 (at age 51). The ‘mugaku (uneducated)’ refers to what he learned from his parents, grandparents, seniors, Yoron legends and songs, what he learned in his daily life, and what he could not learn in school (wisdom, ethics, etc.) The “Diary”consisting of 59 chapters, is not only a personal history, but also a life history of Yoron Island in the Taisho/Showa periods. And the “Diary” is an irreplaceable book that shows the sincerity of the relationship between human and nature .
