A balloon kyphoplasty is a surgery treatment of vertebral compression fractures, which includes operations of incision / opening into the fractured bone, insertion / inflation of balloon to correct the fracture deformity, removal of balloon to create the cavity and the injection of bone cement into the cavity. As an alternative material of balloon which can stay in vertebral without removal, we examined the utilization of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2: HAp)-coated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) fabric bag for the enhancement of the bone connection. The coating conditions were optimized as follows: (i) 80 vol% H2SO4 treatment at 40°C for 5 min (surface roughening), (ii) vacuum-ultraviolet irradiation for 120 min (hydrophilicity enhancement) and (iii) 20 dipping–withdrawing-drying cycles, using HAp-dissolved solution (enhancement of biocompatibility). The bone paste of Biopex-R® kneaded with human blood could be injected into the fabric bag without leaking, indicating the HAp-coated PEEK fabric being applicable to the surgery operation of kyphoplasty.

Manganese phosphate is used as a violet pigment. In this manganese phosphate preparation, the effect of milling the mixture of manganese oxide and diammonium hydrogen phosphate was investigated. For samples mixed at a P/Mn=2/1 ratio, heating at 400°C produced the brightest purple pigment. In these samples heated at 400°C, the longer milling time resulted in a more distinct violet pigment. The samples showed weak XRD peaks of NH4MnP2O7. Samples with different P/Mn ratios were also examined in the same way. When paint was prepared using the obtained violet pigment and applied over the letters, it was confirmed that the hiding power was improved by mill treatment on the raw materials.

Apatite-fiber scaffolds (AFSs) with excellent biocompatibility have been developed using single-crystal apatite fiber (AF) as scaffolds for tissue engineering. We have reported that the AFSs with a pore diameter of approximately 150 µm have three-dimensional (3D) interconnecting pores that allow cell penetration, which facilitates the successful 3D culturing of cells, such as hepatocytes and osteoblasts. In this study, to clarify the pore structure of scaffold materials with a 3D structure suitable for the reconstruction of regenerated liver organoids, five AFSs with different porosities and pore diameters were prepared, including a ‘large pore type AFS’ using 250 µm CB in addition to conventional carbon beads (CB) of particle diameter of 150 µm particle diameter. In vitro evaluations of five AFSs was performed using HepG2 cells, which are model hepatocytes. As a result, AFS with 250 µm CB is useful for the construction of liver organoids.
