Control mechanisms of stomatognathic function, posture, and movement are closely related to each other, but these research areas have been studied separately as independent fields. The objective of this study was to review the literature and identify studies that suggest a correlation between stomatognathic function and body posture and movement to clarify the need for collaborative works between these research areas. Specifically, we reviewed current evidence related to the following three topics: 1) control mechanisms of stomatognathic function, posture, and movement; 2) functional interrelationship between jaw clenching and body posture and movement; and 3) effects of changes in body posture on swallowing function.
