Copper is produced by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical process. Copper production by hydrometallurgical process emerged in 1990s and 20 % of world copper production is by this process at present. Hydrometallurgical process includes leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning and oxide and secondary copper sulfide have been mainly leached with sulfuric acid, however, as such easily leached minerals are depleting, technologies to leach primary copper sulfide, of which leaching kinetics are very slow, are required to meet the growing demand of copper for the carbon neutral society. This paper describes the overview about current status and new technologies of leaching of primary sulfide copper.
