This study aimed to summarize the available evidence on educational programs for the nursing of patients who have attempted suicide, and to examine the practice of such educational programs in Japan. The PubMed and Ichushi databases were searched using the keywords “suicide nursing education program.” A total of 14 interventional studies involving nurses were analyzed. The studies were conducted worldwide, most often in hospitals with multiple clinical departments. The educational programs consisted mainly of lectures conducted primarily face-to-face. The content of the educational programs included general knowledge on suicide and skills for working with patients who have attempted suicide. All studies showed that nurses benefited from the educational programs, with improved knowledge and attitude about suicide, and greater confidence in caring for those who have attempted suicide. Thus, it is important to develop educational programs on the nursing of patients who have attempted suicide in Japan.
