The cut-off wall is the main structure of underground dam. The construction technology to build it developed in the area where it was difficult to secure the source of water. It has been the common purpose to use the topography and to collect groundwater efficiently. The shape and the scale of old cut-off walls which are left in Japan and abroad are different each other. However, old underground dams which continue operating for many centuries are the precious agriculture inheritances that are still used for irrigation in the present. In this paper, I perform the survey about old cut-off walls which exist in outside and inside the country for researching the origin of underground dam.
