The choice between the double object and dative constructions is determined to a great extent by information structure, as pointed out by Rappaport Hovav and Levin (2005). That is, the occurrence of dative alternation is largely due to "focus shift." This paper argues that it is not an entailment but an implicature whether "a transfer of possession" is completed successfully in the event denoted by the double object construction as is often claimed in the literature. We should shed more light on the information structure when these two constructions with dative verbs are introduced in classroom. The paper also suggests that using DVD is extremely useful for introducing such linguistics theory in a classroom since students can have three kinds of information: literal, auditory, and visual one. Especially, using lines in a sitcom as teaching aids helps students learn more effectively.

The far-reaching goal of the new subject "English Expression II" in the new Course of Study for Senior High Schools necessitates urgently devising effective ways of studying the subject with concrete proposals because there is a significant gap between the goal and the reality. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and explore one proposal for reaching English education goals through the use of movies, referring to its possibilities and limits from the perspective of generative linguistics. After pointing out the often-overlooked difference between communicative competence and linguistic competence, the paper discusses significant interpretive contributions of pauses and intonations used in verbal communication, and explains that movies are an ideal form of media to teach those aspects of communication. The paper provides an analysis of a scene from the movie Gladiator as an example of using movies for effective English education. A couple of problems of using movies are also mentioned followed by suggestions of preventive measures to those problems. The paper hopes to demonstrate that English education using movies is a promising and optimal way of studying "English Expression II" in the new Course of Study for Senior High Schools.
