    Larkin is particularly concerned with the exploration of rhyme to activate the meaning of his poems. Therefore, in the former part of this paper, I focus my attention on his adroit use of rhyme schemes which neatly correspond to the content of his poems. In "Ambulances", the enclosed rhyme scheme is employed to call up the image of the "closed" ambulances, whose interior room, being isolated from the world of everyday-life, is a metaphor for the anteroom to death. In "Vers de Societe", the arrangement of the three rhymes in each stanza shifts as the poem develops and thus Larkin manages ingeniously to evoke the gradual change of the speaker's meditation. In the latter part of this paper, I deal with Larkin's use of perfect and imperfect rhymes which are closely related to the content or meaning of his poems. In "Reasons for Attendance", the speaker's irritated feelings of self-doubt underneath the apparent confidence in his commitment to art are reflected in the use of the imperfect rhymes in the first three stanzas. However, his pretension has given away to genuine feelings of envy towards the young dancers. Thus, his eventual sense of relief is suggested by the perfect rhymes in the last stanza. In "The View", an exclusive use of perfect rhymes (including three feminine rhymes) is associated with the steady steps of approaching death. On the other hand, the half- rhymes and the feminine half-rhymes of "Toads" and "Toads Revisited" serve to evoke a comic aura for their persona by means of their discordant sounds. In "The Importance of Elsewhere", the half-rhymes are effectively used to emphasize the speaker's isolation and the differences in speech between the Irish people and him. Thus, Larkin is one of the few modern poets who attempt to explore the possibilities of rhyme to the full.

      Ernest Hemingway once said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn.” He continued, however, to say about the second part of the story, “If you read it, you must stop where the Nigger Jim is stolen from the boys [sic]. That is the real end. The rest is just cheating.” As with Huckleberry Finn, most of Mark Twain's long novels have often been criticized as incoherent in the development of thematic concerns and inconsistent in the description of characters. The same is particularly true of his quaint-looking combined story, The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson and the Comedy of Those Extraordinary Twins (1894). Yet, this book seems to me a tightly united and connected novel. In order to reveal this, the following questions will be discussed in this paper, especially in the light of the writer's traumatic autobiographical facts. Why is the title character and the hero of the former story, Wilson, mocked as a pudding-head? Why is this story titled Wilson's tragedy, not Roxy's nor Tom's? Why did Mark Twain add the latter farce of Those Extraordinary Twins to the former tragic drama of Pudd'nhead Wilson?

    従来鷺水の怪異小説は、中国小説の利用との関わりでしか論じられてこなかった。そこで本稿では従来の評価を変えようとする試みとして、今まで見落とされていた近時の事件や情報を取り入れている点に注目し、それらに存在する際物的な特質についての考証を試みた。その一例として『御伽百物語』の二話とある事件との関わりについての考察を行い、鷺水の怪異小説観についても考えてみた。

    What kind of televised animation has most attracted Japanese children of today? "Pocket Monster, " which was originally made for a data-trading game for Nintendo's Gameboy, has been overwhelmingly popular. Consideration will be given to the detailed analysis of the animation's structure in comparison with its orginal game and comic scripts, which are found in children's monthly magazines such as "Korokoro Comics" and Shogakukan's "Primary Grader: 4th to 6th." In particular, major features of both the openings and the endings, as well as their broadcasting time schedules will be thoroughly examined to illustrate why "Pocket Monster" has become so popular.

    To clarify the conceptual attitude of professional athletes, this paper presents 3 views on occupation using the main analytical framework proposed by Kunio Odaka. The first is the economic perspective. Referring to the content of the Japanese Standard Classification of Occupations, by clearly distinguishing this from other occupations in sports, professional athletes are defined as a profession “participating in competition or games and performing athletic competition.” From the viewpoint of income type and qualifications, we assume that numerous types of professional athletes exist. The second is the perspective of technical skill. Based on the discussions of Mitsuo Taketani and Tomihiko Sato, technical characteristics of athletes are defined as demonstration of their skills in accordance with sports structure as an objective law. Moreover, referring to the organization theory of Ikujiro Nonaka and Hirotaka Takeuchi, we point out that professional athletes are able to transform sports structure in terms of organizational creation. The third perspective of ethics considers the duties that are required of professional athletes. We conclude that their duties in relation to teammates are concerned with the “pursuit of victory through cooperative relationships.” In relation to opponents, such duties are “playing the game through a mutual relationship” and “pursuit of victory in an exclusive relationship.” With regard to spectators, such duties are concerned with “entertainment” and, in terms of the broad relationship to society, “the embodiment of social values”. These 3 aspects are diverse, and dependent on the extent of an athlete’s expertise.

    In the time of COVID-19, we become more sensitive to the signifier of “masque” as represented by the works of major American Renaissance writers such as: Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death”(1842), Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Howe’s Masquerade”(1838) and Herman Melville’s The Confidence Man: His Masquerade(1857). Although these texts do not refer to actual pestilences prevalent in the Antebellum period, they cannot help but remind us of the contagious history of smallpox, yellow fever and Cholera from the 17th century through the mid-19th century. To put it another way, it is contagion that keeps empowering itself through its catachrestic signification.

    From this perspective, this paper attempts to reveal how American history has revolutionized the discourse of illness by examining texts from the colonial era through the postmodern age. The first chapter discusses Thomas Harriot’s A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia(1588), which considers plagues like smallpox as the “invisible bullets” and endorses the idea that “God protects his chosen people by killing off untrustworthy Indians”(Stephen Greenblatt, Shakespearean Negotiations, 36). By the same token, however, it is also true that despite his orthodox religious faith, Harriot was rumored to be atheist, simply because he was a typical Renaissance man equipped with the proto-modern but miraculously encyclopedic knowledge of mathematics, cartography, optics, and navigational science. As Christopher Marlowe pointed out, Harriot followed In the footsteps of Moses as a juggler. Therefore, the second chapter argues that Ishmael Reed’s postmodern metafiction Mumbo Jumbo(1971), which features an imaginary anti-plague “Jes Grew” and redefines Moses not only as a sorcerer but also as the prophet of Voodoo Jazz, could well be interpreted as an African American critique of European logocentric colonialism.

    The third chapter examines Charles Brockden Brown’s Arthur Mervyn or, Memoirs of the Year 1793(1799–1800), the archetype of American pandemic fiction featuring the yellow fever that conquered Philadelphia in 1793. What with John Edgar Wideman’s postmodern novel like Philadelphia Fire(1990) and what with Samuel Otter’s comprehensive study Philadelphia Stories(2010), Arthur Mervyn is reconfigured now as a postcolonial Gothic Romance ending up with an interracial marriage between the Scottish American protagonist and the Jewish Portuguese woman Achsa Fielding described as “unsightly as a night-hag, tawney as a Moor, the eye of a gypsey”(Arthur Mervyn, 230).

    The fourth chapter starts with a reading of Sakyo Komatsu’s pandemic novel Virus: The Day of Resurrection(1964), which dramatizes the way a deadly bioweapon, MM-88, based on microbes collected by satellites in outer space in 1963 and 1964, paves the way for not only a world-wide epidemic initially known as the “Tibetan Flu” but also the total nuclear war. This novel gave transpacific impacts upon the post-apocalyptic imagination of Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain(1969) and Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao(2007), the hero of which, characterized as a typical nerd, convinces us of the rhetorical distinction between xenophobia and xenophilia at stake in the time of pandemic.

    In this article four essential characteristics of the drama of realism are examined; Büchner and Brecht are taken as examples. These four are: (1) that reality is vividly drawn, (2) that the problems and contradictions in the society are emphasized, (3) that familiar events in everyday life are presented by people familiar to us, and (4) that the audience really experiences what happens in the drama and is encouraged to get engaged in social and political actions.
