Fish fauna in the Zostera zone in Shimoda Bay and Nabeta Cove was studied by monthly sampling with a small beam trawl during March 1973 to March 1974.Sampling was made also in the sandy bottom of Nabeta Cove.A total of 135 species (13 orders, 58 families) were collected, i.e., 106 species (11 orders, 50 families) in the Zostera zone of Shimoda Bay, 84 species (10 orders, 39 families) in the Zostera zone of Nabeta Cove, and 60 species (10 orders, 34 families) in the sandy bottom of Nabeta Cove.Analysis of species composition revealed a slight difference between the Zostera zone of Shimoda Bay and that of Nabeta Cove, and a considerable difference between the Zostera zone and the sandy bottom in Nabeta Cove. The significant effect of Kuroshio Current on the fish fauna and the abundant appearance of rocky shore fishes were also noticed in these areas
The percentage of both the number of species and that of individuals among yearround resident, seasonal resident, seasonal transient, and casual species was nearly the same between the Zostera zone of Shimoda Bay and that of Nabeta Cove, but it was fairly different between the Zostera zone and the sandy bottom in Nabeta Cove.
The number of species and the total number of individuals collected in the Zostera zone showed a different seasonal change between Shimoda Bay and Nabeta Cove. This seems due to the difference of embayment degree between the two bays. The number of individuals obtained suggested that the Zostera zone has a higher population density than the sandy bottom.

The longitudinal distribution of fishes in the Inohzawa River watershed, southern Izu Peninsula, Japan, was documented. Water temperature and salinity in the middle and lower reaches were also measured in order to determine the influence of salt water on fish distribution. Forty-one fish species were recorded by collection with throw nets, hand nets, bare hands and angling or by visual observation, from April 2005 to August 2009. Eight additional species listed in other reports brought the total number of fish species found in the watershed to 49. Zacco platypus and Tribolodon hakonensis were abundant in the upper and middle reaches, and Mugil cephalus cephalus and Acanthogobius flavimanus in the lower reaches, suggesting that these four species were dominant in the watershed. A clear-cut salt wedge was found in the lower reaches throughout the year, the front reaching 2.6 km upstream of the river mouth. Fish species composition changed abruptly in reaches 2 km upstream of the salt wedge front, although a transition was apparent at a station 1 km upstream of the front. Therefore, the salt wedge appeared to influence fish distribution within 3.6 km upstream of the river mouth.

In this paper, we first overview the formation and history of the “Honzō Dōshokubutsu Zufu 本草動植物図譜” (Honzō Natural History Album of Animals and Plants) and “Keizan Shasei 渓山写生” (Keizan’s Sketches from Life) by Kyoto Confucianist and Honzō naturalist Yamamoto Ayao 山本 章夫 (1827-1903, pseudonym Keigu, later Keizan), from Yamamoto Dokushoshitsu Collection, deposited at the Kyoto Institute, Library and Archives. Next, we present a catalogue (Table 1) of 363 sheets of the fish shasei-zu 写生図 (sketches from life) contained in both texts. We identify the species of fish found here, giving particular attention to species thought to have been collected in Mie Prefecture and compare them with the current fish fauna of Mie Prefecture, examining the dialectical fish names recorded in the fish shasei-zu.

A previous checklist of the fishes of Sagami Bay, Japan, which included 1517 species belonging to 249 families (45 orders) recorded up to 2006, was revised using the following resources: fish collections of the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of National History (KPM), the fish image database in KPM and literature records. The survey revealed 1934 species belonging to 284 families (43 orders) in the study area. Many of the species newly recorded in Sagami Bay are distributed mainly in waters south of the bay, which is likely to be closely linked to the transport of fishes by the Kuroshio Current. In addition, the recent rise in seawater temperatures in and around Sagami Bay due to global warming and other factors, may have allowed normally southern fish species to overwinter in Sagami Bay, thus leading to the significant increase in the number of species recorded over a relatively short period.
