Schrenck classified the Orokko as an Olcha tribe in Sakhalin on the basis of his of their speech. Afterwards Shirokogoroff included the Orokko dialect together with the Orochi dialect in the North ern Branch of Tungus and the Olcha dialect in the Southern Branch. However neither of them has submitted the linguistic evidence for these views. The present author investigates the position of the Orokko dialect anew. Its vocabulary seems to be more similar to that of the Olcha dialect than to that of the Orochi dialect. In the four sound corres-pondences (p-|, h-, h-‖zero, -r-|zero, -i‖-g-) the Orokko dialect coincides with the Olcha dialect, and not with the Orochi dialect. Although the materials available are scanty, the Orokko dialect seems to be nearer to the Olcha than to the Orochi dialect, so far as the present investigation is concerned.
