The lecturer discussed four aspects of art librarianship in the United States: first, the historical background with brief description of the five types of art libraries - art division of college and university library, art and design school library, art museum library, art department in public library and business library, that have developed since the end of nineteenth century to the present; second, the formation and growth of the specialized professional associations, especially on ARLIS/NA; third, the education for art librarianship; and fourth, the use of new technology introduced into the fields and various libraries of arts and humanities. At the end of the article, she stressed the possibility of linking the libraries throughout the world via innovative bibliographic utilities such as RLIN and expects art librarians in both US and Japan to be sharing information and solutions to mutual problems by the end of this decade.
