Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is expected to achieve higher thermal efficiency and cleaner exhaust emissions in internal combustion engines compared to conventional combustion systems. Diethyl ether (DEE) can be used as a fuel for HCCI engines because it has a good auto-ignition property. However, operation is restricted due to the premature ignition timing and high thermal efficiency can not be realized. While HCCI engines do not have physical ignition devices, ignition can be controlled chemically by mixing two kinds of fuels with different auto-ignition properties. In this study, low carbon number alkanes such as methane, ethane and propane are mixed with DEE to investigate their effects on the auto-ignition process.
