Since Soka City is located in southeastern Saitama near central Tokyo, the development of the "Sokamatsubaradanchi" public housing complex, starting in 1961, happened rapidly with economic growth, and it has been a prosperous "bed town" (a town that people commute from). There are very few buildings from the Edo period (1603-1868) or before remaining in Soka City because the area was subject not only to the influence of the housing development but also to the influence of the fire at Soka-juku (the "inn town" there) in 1870 and the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. In order to check the changes in Soka City housing, a comparison was done between the present situation and the situation as documented in a survey on traditional homes done between 1979 and 1980. It showed that the environment had largely changed in the intervening years. However, there were no cases of housing where both main building and surroundings existed as they were between 1979 and 1980, and in three cases the houses no longer existed on the premises. It was confirmed that on average, 32 percent of the buildings were still in existence, as was 48 percent of the plant life.
