Refining process with a little quantity of slag in the top and bottom blowing converter (LD-OTB) has been found very promising one through the experiments of using low sulfur and low phosphorus hot metal. Desulfurization and dephosphorization of the hot metal was carried out using a 350 t torperdo car after desiliconization practice and phosphorus content was reduced to the level less than 0.02%. The hot metal, charged into 240 t top and bottom blowing converter was refined at a little quantity of slag less than 8 kg/t in burnt line consumption. A little quantity of slag refining process brought us such good features as lowering the critical carbon content (C
*) which decarborization rate decreases in the top and bottom blowing converter, increasing manganese content and reducing hydrogen content at turn down.
However, the increase of iron loss into exhaust gas was observed to some extent in spite of the slag volume decrease and the pretreatment of desiliconization might have a tendency toward the shortage of heat in high temperature heat. One of the countermeasures for these two problems was tested by super soft blowing which was the extreme high lance height practice. The super soft blowing was found out very effective not only for preventing the increase of iron loss into exhaust gas with assistance of bottom stirring, but also for compensating the heat by controlling the post combustion of CO gas.

The mathematical model for numerical analysis of the gas flow and combustion reaction in a converter is developed by taking into account of the equilibrium reaction of CO-CO
2-O
2 gas mixture at a given temperature. The effect of molten steel bath shape, thermal condition of side wall and operation conditions on the combustion ratio is clarified by the calculation on the mathematical model.
The model is compared by the evaluation of the combustion ratio between calculated value and observed one. By considering the depression of molten steel bath and the heat flow to side wall, the high temperature gas region above 2250 K in the converter is found to appear near molten steel bath surface.

Theoretical study was made and its result was compared with hot model experiment in order to understand gas flow, and heat and mass transfer in the converter with a top blowing lance.
The experiment was made in a 200 kg high frequency induction furnace equipped with a oxygen lance. Post combustion ratio, γ, measured by a mass spectrometer increases with increase in lance height and decrease in oxygen flow rate. Transfer efficiency, η
H, of reaction heat of CO and CO
2 formation to metal bath decreases with increasing γ.
Two dimensional equations of continuity, conservation for momentum, enthalpy and gas species were solved numerically under the condition that the reaction rate at a fire spot is controlled by diffusion in a gas phase. The ad hoc model was used for the calculation of effective viscosity. The values of γ and η
H computed under the constant heat and mass transfer coefficients agree with the measured ones except for the effect of oxygen gas flow rate on η
H.
The computed profiles of physical quantities indicate as follows : The gradients of temperature and concentrations between the lance tip and the depressed surface of metal bath were steeper than those in the other region. The maximum temperature and CO
2 concentration are in the recirculating flow zone located between the lance tip and the depressed surface.

本研究は,RC構造物と同程度の規模の独立した補強土擁壁を実現し,建設事業におけるCO2 排出量削減とコスト縮減に資することを目的としている. これまでの研究では,実物大規模の静的水平載荷試験や衝撃載荷試 験,および動的遠心模型実験などからその実用性を確認してきた.本論文では,これらの実験結果を再現し得る簡易な外的安定照査手法を提案しているので報告する.

A new technology for hot metal pretreatment with the modified BOF has been developed at Kobe Works. This technology has been successfully applied to mass production of high-grade steel since November 1983. The furnace for hot metal pretreatment has an 80 t capacity and is equipped with two lances for flux injection and oxygen top blowing. Hot metal is desiliconized and dephosphorized with oxygen and lime-iron oxide based flux in the first stage of refining, and desulphurization with soda ash injection is followed without deslagging.
This paper describes the pretreatment technology and results of the operation. Features of this process are as follows:
(1) Excellent reaction efficiency and reaction rate because of the suitable furnace shape for refining.
(2) Sequential and rapid dephosphorization and desulphurization treatment within about fifteen minutes.
(3) Low treatment cost by using cheap submaterials, such as lumpy burnt lime, BOF slag.
(4) Increase of the manganese content in the hot metal and dephosphorization reaction efficiency by the addition of manganese ore.
(5) Treatment of hot metal with high silicon content(Si ≈ 0.40%) in reasonably short time and with low cost.

Tests of post combustion of CO gas in 15 t pilot converter and 160 t and 250 t commercial combined blowing converter were carried out for aiming to improve heat balance.
And also coal injection test through top lance with post combustion system was carried out in 15 t pilot converter with bottom gas stirring.
Following results were obtained.
(1) The optimum amount of oxygen for post combustion was about 20% of total oxygen rate, and the jet angle of 3035° was desirable for obtaining the good condition of post combustion.
(2) The heat transfer efficiency of post combustion to metal bath was 70 to 100%.
Accordingly around 10% increase of scrap ratio was obtained.
(3) In the case of blasting of pulverized coal on metal surface, the heat transfer was nearly equal to the theoretical value and the scrap ratio increased in proportion to the amount of coal added.

In order to elucidate the gas jetting phenomena upon a liquid such as a cavity formation and splashing of liquid, an energy balance equation has been derived, where the total gas cavity energy is the sum of a cavity potential energy and a cavity surface energy increment. A linear relationship between those sum per unit cavity volume and the energy density at the nozzle lance exit over liquid were observed and the effective energy coefficient for utilization for inlet energy has been derived as a function of a dimensionless lance height. This paper also discuss the effects of surface tension and viscosity of a liquid as well as that of inlet gas over cavity formation behavior and splashing caused by gas jetting over a liquid.
