The results of roost enquiry and published and unpublished data on the status and ecology of the Grey Starling
Sturnus cineraceus in Japan are compiled briefly by prefecture.
In all more than forty old and present roosts are listed with notes. Some roosts have been changed or abandoned with the spread of human habitation over feeding grounds while others still remain in the midst of city. Although some starlings are resident as north as in Hokkaido, there are north-south and altitudinal movements. Some have strayed over ocean south to the Bonin and Volcano Is., etc. In Honshiu it is a common lowland bird making great flocks and has reached up to 600-700 m of altitudes, but in Kiushiu it is less abundant and seems to be absent from its subtropical southernmost part.
Some notes on breeding and feeding habits and other aspects are also given. Further reports are desired for clarification of its overall status in Japan.
