It has become customary to view the Taiheiki as a commentary upon or a criticism of history. However,history is not an externally extant reality; rather,it is something fabricated by language. What is the relationship of the act of writing to the fabrication -a highly ideological one- of the Taiheiki? This essay pursues the meaning of the Taiheiki's writting of history by sounding the work in order to attempt a history of expression.
