This paper discusses the practice of three social studies lessons in historical aspect as a unit for 191 eighth-grade students for five classes at Q junior high school in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, in Japan. The overarching title is "Industrial revolution in Japan: Thinking about a sustainable society by comparing the past with the present of two copper mines."The final goal is for the students to think of and then develop their individual answers to the primary learning question "What is a sustainable society?" in their own words. Based on the learning of history and comparing it to the present situation of each local community around the Ashio and Besshi copper mines, in Tochigi and in Ehime prefectures respectively, the students evaluated the two mines pasts and their relationship with the present in regards to five viewpoints related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Referring to a radar chart that illustrates their evaluation, they improved their understanding through group and class discussions. Based on the comparison between their post-lesson with pre-lesson responses submitted by three students responding to the learning question, it has been suggested that this practice has provided the students with the opportunity to think about a sustainable society and its related issues as their own matters.
