This study focuses on the relationship between urban development and Shinto shrine renovations. In the case of Tokyo Metropolitan Area, Shinto shrines in three wards in the central Tokyo have been renovated in compliance with various rules of urban development. To understand the ways in which development has been successfully completed in each case, we carried out a detailed literature review and interviews. By establishing an overview of cases, we identified common factors as well as the post-development process of spatial formation and rationale for design. Our findings show that Shinto shrines are protected from the threat of development.
