In this paper, it is aimed to clarify the character of “inner void block” as a fragmental urban morphology by viewing from spatial compositions and genealogical records. In the first part, the distribution of the inner void block around the residential area in Tokyo is examined by observing the house detailed map. In the second part, the spatial composition of the inner void block is examined by field survey, and the genealogical record of inner void block is examined by observing the land use and its peripheral arrangement of houses in the block in the old maps. In the final part, the typology of the innner void block is led by the relationship between the spatial composition and the genealogical record of block. As a result, the structured characteristics of the inner void block is clarified through the comparison between types.

Back Drainage Space (BDS) is a 15-foot wide alleyway with surface drainage and underground sewage facilities built behind the building blocks in the Central Business District (CBD) of Yangon City, implemented by the British during the colonial period in the late 19th century. There are 188 BDSs in the CBD however the spaces above ground have been underutilized for decades. In 2017, a social enterprise called Doh Eain has attempted to revitalize BDS as a community space and transformed six BDSs from trash alley to garden alley via Alley Garden Project (AGP). Revitalizing BDS as a public space will benefit the citizens by improving the living environment and urban amenity and AGP demonstrated its potential. The authors investigated about historical background, residents’ preference, project process and outcome to understand how the use and perception of the space were changed by the project and what issues remain. This paper is based on a literature review and field surveys including semi-structured interviews, ocular survey, Focus Group Discussion and household surveys conducted from July 2017 to October 2018.

The survey findings are summarized in the following six themes. 1) History: residents used to use BDS as a social space in the past but they were closed around the 1988 uprising. 2) Usage: Some informal usage in and around the entrance of BDS have been observed. Such activities are not officially allowed but some of them are accepted by the community because it provides not only place for socializing but also pays for the alley maintenance and serves as a security post. The city government today allows their use for a public good like AGP. 3) Existing self-governing organization: the active participants of the AGP turned out to be the members of existing self-governing, volunteer community group which manages infrastructure-related issues within the ward. 4) Existing issues and needs: issues related to safety, security and sanitation were recognized before the AGP. In regards to accessibility, most residents do not have direct access to BDS from their unit. 5) Impact and changes brought by the project: the AGP increased the use of the BDS and improved people’s perception of it, while promoting communication among the stakeholders such as between residents and authority. 6) Future issues and residents’ preference: most residents think BDS can be open to the public but not for business like teashop.

In conclusion, AGP was a long-awaited intervention realized by strong initiative and executing ability by Doh Eain but the active local community also played a significant part. Remaining issues are 1) Safety due to a lack of accessibility; 2) Sanitation; 3) Amenity for creating more open space; 4) Security; 5) Sustainable maintenance system; and 6) Community participation. This study demonstrated the potential of the remaining 182 BDSs. The city and the community could take on the work of solving the related issues in the future, focusing on 1) disaster prevention countermeasures by improving the accessibility to BDS; 2) designating a community organization to carry out a sustainable management scheme; 3) utilizing both local power and external support; and 4) scaling up from the project to a program, with a possible transfer of authority from the government to the community group.

Alleyways are functional not only as passages but also as space for complementing inhabitants’ needs of their daily activities and for communication with neighbors. Plenty of alleyways are formulated inside the shophouse blocks in the central area of Phnom Penh. It is utilized as both private and public space by inhabitants whereas underlying principles of alleyway – correspondence relationship between space and activity – are still remaining as a key subject on the architectural and urban planning regardless of the difficulty of preserving such spatial functions due to rapid development pressure. Statistical approach utilizing spatial information of alleyways and inhabitants’ activities will lead appropriate understanding of such phenomenon and its outcomes are expected to support spatial planning of city blocks,

This study aims to grasp spatial characteristics of alleyways and its impact on inhabitants’ activity through statistical analyses utilizing spatial information developed from network analysis based on the field survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows:

     1) Alleyways are utilized by 16% out of the total area of 12,636m2. Living activities dominates 80% of utilized area whereas commercial activities fulfill the remaining 20% of the utilized area. Among living activities, 37% of the area is used as parking of motorbikes, 15% as others/ storage and 10% as chatting and cleaning respectively. Commercial activities are dominated by retail selling and eatery by 9% and 8% respectively.

     2) Activity density tends to increase in proportion to the width of alleyways. Eateries are mostly located at the alleyways with 2~4m width whereas retail selling and chatting/ relaxing activities are located at the ones with 5~7m width. Motorbikes are located evenly across the most of widths. Shortest path distance does not have significant impact on activity density. Alleyways with accumulative angle over 270 degrees and approach to alleyways from sidewalk around the block indicate higher activity density as well.

     3) Alleyways are classified into 11 clusters by cluster analysis. Narrow dead-end alleyways are merely used as parking. Chatting/ relaxing tend to be generated at the location with high density of building entrances and wider width. Cooking and eating activities are mainly distributed at narrow and recessed places. Other/ storage are observed either at narrow and recessed alleyways or alleyways with wider width. Eateries are located at the approach to alleyways whereas retail selling tends to be located at large-opened area.

     4) Multiple regression coefficient is not high for individual activity by cluster; however, entire living activities indicates relatively higher coefficient by 0.47 of R2 in which cluster 8 to 11, the alleyways with wider width, gives positive impact on generation of living activities.

These results infer several perceptions on block planning, that is, a) necessity of appropriate arrangement of parking, b) emplacing wide-width alleyways gradually dispersed into individual space by taking turns while keeping certain amount of width for coexistence of commercial and living activities inside shophouse blocks, and c) enlargement and improvement of accessibility to building entrances will enhance utilization of narrow and dead-end alleyways by converting current usage from storage to other living activities.

This paper aims to clarify the diversity of open courtyards in faubourg Saint-Antoine area in Paris, by focusing on spatial composition and by analyzing the exterior space arrangement and the connection with the street and with the buildings. Firstly, the arrangement patterns are shown by analyzing the arrangement of the compositional units articulated by their surrounding buildings. Secondly, the connection patterns are described by analyzing the distributive role of the courtyard and the form of its connection with the street.
Finally, by considering both of these patterns, 10 types of spatial compositions appear which show the diversity of the open courtyards. Then, comparing these types reveals their structural characteristics.
