Mass transfer processes across an oil/water interface were discussed on the basis of electrochemistry of single micrometer-sized oil-droplets in water. Electrolysis of a solute in a single oil-droplet contacted with a microelectrode in water can be quickly completed, and mass transfer processes of the product from the droplet into the surrounding water phase and the solute from water into the droplet are induced. Based on the technique, interfacial mass transfer processes of an electrochemically produced intermediate and neutral species were kinetically analyzed. Microcapillary manipulation and microelectrode methods have been shown to be indispensable in elucidating the mass transfer processes across the oildroplet/water interface.
