Electric vehicle (EV) will prevail in the near future and many EV's are expected to be parked all day or almost all day according to a survey in Japan. They can contribute as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) to primary frequency regulation in power systems. However, as lithium-ion battery or EV battery is still expensive, it is economically important to evaluate V2G frequency regulation cost. This paper proposes the evaluation method of the frequency regulation cost. The proposed method is based on the EV battery cost and longevity which is shortened by performing the frequency regulation. The battery degradation consists of calendar aging and cycle aging, and an empirical model is used in this paper. Simulation results are shown using the proposed method under the various conditions such as state of charge (SoC) of the EV battery. Those results indicate a V2G control strategy to increase the cost-benefit of primary frequency regulation.

Battery Energy Storage system (BESS) is prospective energy storage in Smart Grid and Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) composed of two different kinds of battery is also studied to achieve better performance and lower cost than single kind of BESS. The cost issue, however, has not been evaluated explicitly so far. On the other hand, BESS is studied and expected for ancillary service although HESS has not been applied to frequency control in power system. This paper focuses on HESS application to frequency control and its economic analysis. In this paper, the important battery characteristics in the application to power system are introduced and two kinds of HESS are evaluated in terms of their cost when they are applied to frequency control. In addition, the cost is analyzed for when HESS is used for Peak Shift as well as frequency control.

The number of EVs is expected to increase rapidly toward carbon neutrality in 2050. They are also expected to contribute to power systems in the same way as BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) under massive renewable energy. However, EVs cannot be used in exactly the same way as BESS. This paper presents research examples of modeling of EVs in order to play a role of BESS, business potentiality of EV aggregators, and reduction of curtailed renewable energy generation by EVs. This paper also explains economical control of EV battery in consideration of battery degradation.

The control of power system networks will become more and more difficult due to installation of new facilities and uneven distribution of loads and generation. In particular, keeping voltage profile at desired value is becoming main problem in power system control because large voltage fluctuation at the substation bus occurs very frequently which makes the power system more and more unstable. In this paper, voltage reactive power controlling method based on time schedule control of shunt reactor and static capacitor is presented. This approach corrects the time schedule of voltage control equipment according to the fluctuation of voltage comparing with the result of power system state forecasting.
This approach is evaluated with small scale and whole power system, and the results show that this proposed method successfully reduces amount of voltage violation and transmission power loss comparing with real data.

Lithium ion batteries (LIB) have been widely applied as power sources for electric devices owing to their light weight and high energy densities. A large amount of cobalt (Co) was used as cathode materials in the LIB, so establishment of Co recycling from spent LIB is demanded. Optimization of heating and grinding process on classification for Co recycling before physical separation from spent LIB was investigated in this study. Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) in spent LIB was transformed to CoO, which was more easily decomposed than LiCoO2 by heating process. Coexisting materials of carbon as an anode in the LIB promoted LiCoO2 decomposition at a lower temperature than the theoretical value for LiCoO2. Furthermore, slow heating rate was effective for grain growth of Co oxide and Co metal. In the grinding process, iron ball as high density media was more effective grinding media than wooden ball as low density media. It was suggested that heating process at low temperature with slow heating rate and grinding process by using high density media could promote the separation of Co and Al by screening process.

To explain the riverbank erosion, it is important to determine quantitatively the shear force distribution acting on it. In this study, we use a multi component load cell to measure directly the shear force on the bank. In this way, we obtained the vertical distribution and the depth-average of the shear force acting on the bank. The vertical shear stress distribution was compared to Reynolds stresses near the bank by using LDV. As a result, the usability of the method is high in the direct measurement of the shear force, because the measured values of vertical shear stress distribution were similar to the Reynolds stress distribution near the bank. The slot existing the measured bank portion and surroundings was found to have negligible effects on the flow and measured values.

Voltage reactive power control (VQC) on power systems becomes difficult when a load increases or decreases rapidly, especially in the morning and at noon. This is caused mainly by two problems. One is delayed operation and the other is noncooperative operation of facilities. To solve these problems, an advanced method for a centralized feed-forwarding control system and algorithms are pre-sented. They are based on two main steps, forecasting power system state for several minutes and dispatching reactive power sources optimally based on stepwise linear programming. The proposed method is evaluated and tested for data of a large scale power system. Results show that the proposed method keeps the voltage constraints well and reduces redundant operation of facilities.

Galactose loading test has long been used as one of so-called liver function tests. However, the significance and mechanism (s) of the test have not been clarified from the viewpoint of liver “functions”. Galactose metabolism has been known to be inhibited by NADH at the site of epimerization from UDP-galactose to UDP-glucose. Therefore, galactose metabolism would be affected by the level of plasma FFA concentration as in the case of glucose metabolism in the liver. In order to study this possibility, the relationship between galactose and lipid metabolism was examined in human beings.
