Because an austempered bainitic spheroidal graphite cast iron (ADI) is a difficult-to-machine material, it has been only grinded so far. In this paper, machining of the ADI by cutting tools including CBN was investigated by both fundamental orthogonal and three dimensional cutting.
The results obtained are as follows;
(1) Chip produced in the fundamental orthogonal cutting could be classified into two types : A (flow type chip) and B (saw-toothed chip).
(2) The optimum condition in machining of the ADI was in the range of producing B type chip. In this range, chips were thin and the cutting forces were low and constant.
(3) From the stand point of the tool life and the surface roughness of the workpiece, the optimum cutting speed for three dimensional cutting of the ADI was 1.67 m/s and the best tool material was the CBN tool containing TiC.
