The purpose of this paper is to clarify the characteristics of double curved surfaces on the exterior of Tohgo Murano's architectural works. Four of his designs were studied. Generating lines which are the composing elements of the surfaces were analyzed, and functions and graphs by which the reference generating lines of the double curved surface of the work are approximated were found. Discussion included the characteristics of the form of each generating line, the form of walls near the ground, the form of the eaves and the parapets, and the form of the roofs.

Tohgo Murano is one of the most important architects in modernization of Japan. Nishiyama Memorial Hall is his masterpiece by the expression with a free architectural style in the later years of him. The characteristic of his works is the expression that a free curve was used for. The beginning is seen in this work. In addition, it has clear construction of three cores and Vierendeel truss. Murano produced oil clay models and examined the design of this architecture continuously. By analysis of his architectural drawings, this research checks his design process along a progress chart, and clarifies that accrual situation. It is a part of research which clarifies his design intension by verifying design process of Murano.

Tohgo Murano is one of the most important architects in modernization of Japan. Shoju-so is his masterpiece by the expression with a variegated detail and various space. In the plan of Shoju-so, it is the feature to have integrated different volume and a style in that design. By analysis of his architectural drawings of Shoju-so's plan, this research examines his design process along a progress chart, and clarifies that actual situation. It is a part of research which clarifies his design intension by verifying design process of Murano.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the peculiar design procedure "HONKA-DIRI". It means that an adaptation of an existing old architecture's design. Togo MURANO is a distinguished Japanese architect, and he used this design procedure from time to time. We experimented with photomontage in black and white. Experiments were made into two parts. The subjects estimated randomly 123 photomontage of Jo-an and Zangetsu-tei. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test. The result suggested that 1) the significant difference on estimation between an existing old architecture's design and new one, and 2) there is his original design.

Today in Japan, there happens emergence of various professions and diversification of delivery systems. However, some points of the current building system don't accommodate to such changes, so it could cause damage to buildings' quality. To this matter, this study treats cooperation between participants in a building project as one way of enhancing buildings' quality. In these days, designers and constructors had close communication and realized high quality buildings in many projects. So the purpose of this study is to show a decision making process of design contents in Kyoto Takaragaike Prince Hotel led by Togo Murano and to consider how designers and other participants, especially constructors cooperated in this project.

Here we did an empirical study of the renovation design method and philosophy of Tohgo Murano, based on his drafts of the renovation work in 1980 of Yonago Public Hall built in 1958. As to the building interior, he placed top priority on the improvement of functionality required by the client. And he renovated intensively the appearance only in the back side of the building. It showed that his renovation philosophy keeps the original design in the fa ade of the building.

The purpose of this paper reveal differences in Sukiya thought between Murano and Yoshida through Murano’s description. The analysis consists of three chapters. Chapter2 reveal elements that Murano uses to explain the designer. Chapter 3 identify the differences between the two as designer. Chapter 4 reveal the differences in Sukiya works.

The results of this study reveal that Murano has common ground with his contemporaries and that we can find commonalities with other designers in his works. The elements are formed by his upbringing. Conversely, Yoshida created his “style” through creating that was strongly defined by his personal preference.

    1. Introduction

This paper elucidated the useful scope of archival processing for architectural materials regarded as research materials in architectural history after the modern age in Japan, where the way of processing architectural materials has not been established yet, and therefore, many unprocessed materials may exist as hidden collections. First, records surveys and records processing from the 1980s to the present were summarized (Chap. 2–4). Subsequently, the records were characterized into architectural material types by comparing architectural research material types to research material types from history and archaeology (Chap. 5). Finally, the usefulness of the archival processing was examined for each type of architectural material (Chap. 6).

    2. Phase 1 (1985–1996): Systematic surveys

First, Terunobu FUJIMORI conducted two location surveys on architectural publications and drawings of “Modern Japan” from the first year of the Meiji era in 1868 to the 20th year of the Showa era in 1940. Both surveys focused on Japanese architects who first appeared during the Meiji era.

    3. Phase 2 (1997–2007): Systematic processing and Interest in archival science

Second, the research records by Chuta ITO, the pioneer of architectural history in Japan, were processed in the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ). His work included more types of records than that of any of the abovementioned architects. In 2000, the National Museum of Nature and Science in Japan commissioned a survey by the AIJ on “architectural materials.” The AIJ continued this survey as its own project and conducted the study tour to the US in 2013. The tour led Japanese architectural historians to show a keen interest in collection policies and archival processing for managing and preserving architectural research materials.

    4. Phase 3 (2008–): Expanding surveys and studying processing

Subsequently, the AIJ conducted a national survey on “modern architecture materials,” commissioned by the National Archives of Modern Architecture, which opened in 2013. Some educational institutions had begun both processing architectural materials and studying their processing during Phase 2. These differ from archival processing in that they focus on architectural drawings, and one drawing was considered a basic unit.

    5. Comparison

Then, the targets of the surveys and the processing were characterized. Before Phase 1, research material types related to architectural history were mainly remains and documents. In 1930, Saburo HORIKOSHI classified architectural research materials made in the Meiji era into six types; however, it was only after the war in 1945 that serious studies on the Meiji era as the modern age were conducted. In this chapter, those architectural material types were systematically categorized by being compared to research material types from history and archaeology. Based on the architectural material types, the targets of the survey and the processing were characterized.

    6. Consideration

After examining the usefulness of the archival processing by referring to four types of architectural materials, it was found that archival processing was highly effective for research records by historians or design records by designers. Those records are called “secondary architectural materials” or “architectural design materials” in this paper.

    7. Conclusion

Archival processing was highly effective for architectural materials such as architectural records by historians or designers, after the modern age in Japan. However, exceptions may occur depending on (i) the activity of the records’ creator, (ii) the records’ owner, and (iii) the age of the records’ creation.

Tohgo Murano is one of the most important architects in modernization of Japan. Nissay Hibrya Building is his masterpiece by the expresslon with a free architectural style. The classicism appearance finished with the granite and the visionary interior space using a pearl oyster received criticism "it is reactionary" In the criticism announced in the past, Murano is said to have advanced the design by a method like a craftsman. By analysis of his architectural drawings, this research checks his design process along a progress chart, and clarifies that actual situation. It is a part of research which clarifies his design intension by verifying design process of Murano.
