Editorial planning in the publication of Japanese books requires editors and publishers to persuade each other about the subject, author and presentation. They must also talk about the potential readers and the methods of marketing the book. The author reviewed the themes of many Japanese paperbacks in the 1950s. During this decade many paperbacks called SHINSHO were published in Japan. IWANAMI SHINSHO, for example, was a famous and educational paperback series. KAPPA BOOK is a representation of a practical group of paperbacks which were bestsellers. Several other SHINSHOs followed IWANAMI and KAPPA.
