Ralph Alexander Smith is one of the central figures in the academic world of art education in the United States of America. He carried on many-sided studies relating to the policy, theory and strategy of art education, especially regarding the University of Illinois, Urbana. He was a well known art educationalist as well as an editor and an author, for example, The Journal of Aesthetic Education, Excellence in Art Education and so on. In the paper, I will give consideration to Smith's aesthetic education theories that closely related the problem of linguistic definition in the 1960's.
