This report is a study of the Shosetsu-zasshi magazines through 30 years till the present time. First of all, I have to define what is the Shosetsuzasshi. It is different from the Bungei-zasshi where the polite literature is inserted. The Shosetsu-zasshi is the monthly magagine where we appreciate entertainment stories. The circulation of the Shosetsu-zasshies has become smaller and smaller year after year. Why? I'll try to give my view about sime reasons by six key words—1. age 2. lifespan 3. author 4. reader 5. pubulisher 6. bookstore. The Shosetsu-zasshi was accompanied by the age all the way, with the result that it became old-fashioned in new ages. We could say that the life span of the Shosetsu-zasshi is already over. But it lives today. For exemple, the Shosetsu-shincho magazine (one of typical Shosetsu-zasshies) survives more than 50 years. The pocketbook boom which Mr. H. Kadokawa invited made many authors think that they would write serial stories but short ones. Many readerds like short stories in the Shosetsu-zasshi more than serial ones. For readers, the price of the Shosetsu-zasshi is probably expensive. But ironically, the smaller the circulation of the Shosetsu-zasshi becomes, the higher the price goes up. How does the publisher think about those situation? They have two ways to do—to stop to publish the Shosetsu-zasshi or to go on publishing it for producing contents of books.
