The Sagami Trough, off the south coast of the Kanto district, is known to have experienced frequent interplate earthquakes in the past based on studies of coastal terraces. The representative earthquakes are the 1703 and 1923 earthquakes. However, it is not definitively known when interplate earthquakes occurred prior to the 1703 earthquake. A characteristic feature of Sagami Trough earthquakes is that they produce tsunamis and crustal deformation. This study focuses on 13 historical earthquakes (in 818, 1241, 1257, 1293, 1408, 1433, 1495, 1498, 1605, 1633, 1677, 1782, and 1853) that may have caused tsunamis in the Sagami Bay area before or during the Edo period, and reviews the research histories of these earthquakes to examine possible interplate earthquakes along the Sagami Trough. Among these, the 1241, 1257, 1293, 1433, and 1495 earthquakes were identified as possible interplate earthquakes. Reviews of the research histories of the five tsunamis associated with these earthquakes show that the 1241 and 1293 tsunamis had an inundation area similar to that of the 1923 tsunami in Kamakura, but the 1241 event could have been a wind wave. However, tectonic studies cannot rule out the possibility of coastal uplift during any of the three earthquakes in the 13th century. Based on the tsunami and crustal deformation findings, it is not possible to determine which earthquake was an interplate earthquake. Because the seismic activity of the 1293 earthquake was higher than that of the other two earthquakes, the 1293 earthquake is a candidate for an interplate earthquake. The 1433 tsunami reached as far as the end of Tokyo Bay, and the 1495 tsunami inundated at least Kamakura. These inundations have characteristics similar to those of the 1703 and 1923 tsunamis. There are no geological records of coastal uplift by the two earthquakes in the 15th century. Neither the tsunami record nor the geological record can determine which earthquake is an interplate earthquake of the Sagami Trough.
