In this report, introduction and transition of diesel railcar in five Japanese rural private railways in prewar days will be explained. Many diesel engines which mounted railcar’s underfloor were imported from European engine builders. But, rural railway’s craftsmen had difficulty in operation and maintenance of foreign high-level complex engines. For the purpose of maintenance easily and good order of operation, diesel engines gradually exchanged for diffused gasoline engines in those days. After World War Two, these railcars mounted domestic diesel engines underfloor of them again. Significance of history of industrial technology for diesel railcars and engines in prewar days concluded in the end of this report.
