Some people who study the Last Lesson by Alphonse Daudet have recently passed negative criticism on the work. Their points are as follows : French was not the mother-tongue of the Alsace people. It was the language which French government forced them to speak. Daudet wrote this novel from the stanpoint of a man who represented France and intended to justify such a froce upon Alsace people. But I don't think such a superficial explanation can cover every aspect of the culture in French language. In another word, the culture of the Alsace people is deeply rooted in the culture of French language. It was France and the French language that French people and Alsace people were possessed of in common as a nation. We shouldn't forget that Daudet's basic viewpoint existed there.
