Basho Matsuo left Edo for Iga-Ueno on August 17, 1684. On the way, he stayed in Ise for about 10 days and arrived at Iga-Ueno on September 8. His first travelogue was written on his experience of this trip. One of famous passages is on a foundling. There are five copies of a different edition, including two autograph manuscripts. We could find some important differences in the chapter of Ise shrine. A passage on the prohibition of a pilgrimage came before a passage of Outer shrine or followed it. We had been under the false impress-ion that they prohibited pilgrims at Outer shrine, because it had been believed that these passages were written in due order. But from the picture scroll, we could see that his course was from Inner shrine to Outer one and so the prohibition was enforced in Inner shrine. Judging from these facts, we could conclude that this was pot a faithful record of the trip, but he recollected later and reproduced it. From this view, some problems could be solved.
