Smart Cards have been deployed in many different sectors since their invention in 1970. The most prominent feature of Smart Cards is the high security owing to its tamper-resistant and computational capability. In the finance sector, EMV-compliant Smart Cards are widely deployed for usage in credit cards. In addition, tests to ensure functional compatibility and certification processes to evaluate their security are available. Furthermore, in the area of telecommunications, Smart Cards are generally used to identify the mobile phone subscriber; however, recently, their usage has been extended to allow payments using mobile phones. In this article, in addition to case studies of Smart Card deployment ranging from Japanese ATM cards with biometric functionality to telecommunications, transportation, and government uses, trends in security technology that enable Smart Cards are introduced.
