        Although previous researches have suggested that Team Identification (Team ID) and Place Attachment are positively correlated, the causal relationship between them has not been clarified sufficiently.
        In this research we attempted to verify the hypothesis that “inhabitants who have raised the Team ID will raise Place Attachment, compared to the inhabitants who have not raised it.” The investigation method was a longitudinal survey focused on inhabitants of Imabari City, designed to assess the change in the Team ID and Place Attachment.
        The results of the two-way ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference between the Place Attachment of inhabitants who had raised the Team ID and those who had not. Place Attachment of the former increased, and thus the hypothesis was supported.
        The causal relationship between Team ID and Place Attachment been clarified by this research, however, the existence and the influence of other parameters have not been clarified. In order to clarify the mechanism between Team ID and Place Attachment, accumulation of expert knowledge will be required.

      Although a causal relationship has been suggested between Team Identification and Place Attachment, it may be necessary to verify the existence of the parameters between them. In this research, "The rise of Team Identification is accompanied by the rise in the evaluation of the social environment of the community, and leads to the rise of Place Attachment," was aimed at the hypothesis to be verified.
       As a result of the two-way analysis of variance based on data from three longitudinal surveys, we determined that Team Identification ascending group significantly increased both Place Attachment and the bonds of the community as compared to the non-ascending group, and it was suggested that the evaluation of the social environment of the community rose in the ascending group. It can be said that the hypothesis was supported, considering the fact that "regional attachment influence structure" was confirmed in Imabari-City, the area of survey on this study.

        The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that the inhabitants who have higher spectating intention or behavior at sporting events in their hometown hold higher place attachment.
         Through the comparison of place attachment among the inhabitants, significant differences have been found. The inhabitants who have higher spectating intention hold a higher degree of place attachment. Moreover, the inhabitants who have experience of spectating behavior hold a higher degree of place attachment than those who do not have it.
        The results of this study indicate some existence of the relationship between spectating intentions or behaviors at sporting events, and place attachment. However, the cause and effect relationship between them has not been established clearly. It is necessary to make continuous research targeted at the inhabitants.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the process by which attachment to the team and attachment to the community are related among core fans of Fighters. An interview and written questionnaire surveys were conducted among the fans, and Kinoshita’s (2020) modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA) was used to analyze their responses. As a result, two findings were obtained: First, there was a process by which local residents’ attachment to the community provided them an impetus to become core fans of the team and enhanced their team attachment. Second, there was a process by which the Fighters has become a symbol of the local community, leading to the increase in fans’ attachment to the team. These results point to the importance of enhancing the reputation of the team among local residents in the management practices of a professional sports team and suggest that building good relationships with the media and the team’s community contribution activities may be necessary to enhance local residents’ attachment to the team.

    This paper examines whether residents’ support for their local professional sports teams has an impact on their community consciousness. We focus on two types of consciousness. One is place attachment to the regional community, and the other is expanded ego, which represents one’s identity with the locality and the instinct for self-preservation from those beyond the bounds of the community. We conducted a social survey of residents (N=1000) of northwestern Chiba in 2018. Through multivariate analysis, we found that fans are likely to have a stronger attachment and ego than non-fans. This result implies that supporting local teams has a possible impact on the relationship between residents and the regional community.

    The purpose of this study is to visualize the social impact of community contribution activities conducted by J-League clubs and to obtain suggestions for maximizing the visualized social impact. To achieve the objectives, this study visualized the social impact of the Kids Caravan implemented by the J-League club Zweigen Kanazawa in 2019 by calculating the value of SROI (Social Return on Investment). In calculating the value of SROI we followed the steps of 1) Identification of stakeholders, 2) Establishment of inputs and calculation of costs, 3) Establishment of outputs and outcomes, 4) Conversion of outcomes into monetary values, and 5) Calculation of SROI. In order to identify stakeholders, relevant materials on the Kids Caravan were reviewed and examined by the co-researchers. As a result of the review, the following groups were identified as stakeholders: those involved with the Kids Caravan participants (participating preschool children, parents, and caregivers), those involved with the J-League clubs that implement the Kids Caravan (school coaches and staff in charge of home towns), the companies that sponsor the Kids Caravan, and the Ishikawa Prefecture Soccer Association. The stakeholders were identified. An impact map was then created and SROI values were calculated based on Kids Caravan related materials, information posted on the website, and the results of interviews with stakeholders. As a result, the SROI value was calculated to be 5.60. This study suggests that the way in which stakeholders are involved may influence the social impact of community contribution activities conducted by J-League clubs.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between spectating intention in local professional sports team and life recovery among disaster-affected residents. A comparison of spectating intention in local professional sports teams revealed that there was a significant difference in the life recovery. In other words, residents who have a high spectating intention have a higher life recovery than residents who have a low spectating intention. As a result of this study, it was suggested that a relationship between spectating intention in local professional sports teams and life recovery might be possible, but it was not sufficient as a variable to explain life recovery. In the future, a survey that considers other variables will be necessary to accurately explain spectating intention in local professional sports teams.

    Opposing clubs involve not only sports competitors but also economic partners that are likely to influence fan behavior. Therefore, it is important to understand rivalry in team sports to ensure the financial viability of the leagues and teams. However, much of the study on rivalry in sports has focused either on professional or high-level men’s collegiate team sports in the US. The research in this study explored the perceptual rivalry of a Japanese professional sport club’s supporters against other clubs and the reasons for the rivalry. Data were collected via an email survey of the official fan club members of Alvark Tokyo, a Japanese professional basketball team in the B.League (N=377). Respondents were asked to rank up to five of the biggest rival clubs in the B.League first division and assess their subjective intensity of rivalry on a 100-point direct rating scale (RP). Next, they were asked to answer the reasons for their rivalry perception, based on 17 rivalry element items. The intensity of the rivalry against each club was calculated as the average value of the RP. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used to assess the differences in the reasons why each club was recognized as the biggest rival. The Chiba Jets was selected as the biggest rival team (RP=84.0), followed by the Tochigi Brex (RP=82.1), the Ryukyu Golden Kings (RP=61.2), the Kawasaki Brave Thunders (RP=56.0), the Seahorses Mikawa (RP=27.4), and the Sunrockers Shibuya (RP=16.9). The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that the reasons for supporters’ perception of rivalry differed significantly across the six clubs. The empirical results suggested that the rivalry against other clubs may be amplified by the overlapping of conditions such as comparable competitiveness, geographical proximity, and historical relationships. Some practical implications are provided.

      Hiroshima is one city in Japan with a high level of sport spectatorship. When cities with sport-related resources recognize the importance of building place attachment among local residents through sport teams as a community bonding resource, activities to attract more event attendees or local residents using their professional sport teams activities can be encouraged. In addition, psychologically, local residents develop a strong bond with local sport teams based on their accumulated experiences. Generally speaking, some findings confirm that team image is a critical factor leading to place attachment. However, studies that verify these findings are lacking. This study was conducted in two major professional sport settings:professional baseball and professional basketball. First, data was collected from spectators attending a home game of the professional basketball team, the Hiroshima Dragonflies. From the 330 questionnaires distributed, 292 usable questionnaires were collected, data for 248 respondents excluding 44 out-of-prefecture residents were used. For the baseball sample, data was collected from spectators attending a professional baseball game at Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium. Questionnaires were distributed to individuals in the stadium at the end of the game. From the 1,000 questionnaires distributed, 241 usable questionnaires were collected, data for 188 respondents excluding 53 out-of-prefecture residents were used. Findings revealed that both teams showed place attachment affects the quality of team image. For the Dragonflies, high and low team identification were shown to affect place attachment. For the Carp, the interactions between team image and team identification significantly affected place attachment, with lower team identification increasing place attachment more than a positive team image. The results suggest that improving team image may increase place attachment among spectators with low team identification. From the standpoint of a regional sports team that claims to be community-based, there is a need for two-way direct and indirect exchanges that deepen ties through social contribution activities and other initiatives to connect with the community, as well as proactive acceptance of support and assistance activities from local residents. In conclusion, (1) team image is related to place attachment, and (2) team identification may play a role as a moderating variable for enhancing place attachment due to unique team attributes.

    After the decision made in September 2013 to hold the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo and the establishment of The Sports Agency in October 2015, the Japanese government has staged the reform of many stadiums and arenas, and more than 60 construction projects of such venues are planned in various parts of Japan. Future issues include establishing a database of sports facilities and fostering project managers for the maintenance of the facilities.

    This paper describes the public value of sports from the perspective of policy. In Section 1, the paper discusses the public nature of sports. Sports have been consumed as a symbol by the public, and government is exploiting sport to get support from the public. On the other hand, sport has the power to create the public sphere, as we see in the case of local sports. In Section 2 and 3, the paper introduces specific examples in policy fields which emphasize the public nature of sport. In order to establish “The Basic Act on Sport” and bid on international sport games such as the Rugby World Cup, Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and World Masters Game, core values of sport were discussed in Japan. “The Basic Act on Sport” is based on the philosophy that communities made by the sport should achieve the public role. International sport games are perceived as opportunities to create a new society. Under this condition, the role of academia in establishing the platform for deliberation is important.

    Generally, the use of public funding for constructing stadiums and arenas is justified by the expected region-wide economic impact, or positive externalities and public-goods aspect of sports. However, it remains unclear whether these impacts or benefits are fully supported by academic evidence. This study, therefore, presents a systematic mapping review of literature to assess the impacts and benefits of sports facilities. Quasi-experiment studies published in peer-reviewed journals since 1997, presenting evaluations of the impact of sports facilities and professional sports teams as well as monetary assessments of their intangible benefits, were reviewed. A structured overview of 52 selected studies, conducted primarily in the United States, is provided. The review presents the scope and type of impact, outcome variables, methodological approaches, and main findings of these studies. The paper presents a series of implications for policymakers and researchers on sports facility management in Japan.

    The objective of this study is to clarify the formation process of place attachment in the comprehensive community sports club members. Specifically, data was collected from 372 comprehensive community sports club members, and a hypothetical model that assumes a relationship among membership history, satisfaction, evaluation of the community, residence years, and place attachment, were examined focused on differences in membership types using structural equation modeling.
    As a result, it was observed that for members who participating sports programs and using facilities, membership history affected satisfaction, satisfaction affected evaluation of the community, and evaluation of the community affected place attachment. For facilities using members, it was observed that satisfaction affected evaluation of the community, and evaluation of the community affected place attachment. Moreover, for both type members, satisfaction had a significantly greater effect on their evaluation of the community than residence years, confirming a significant indirect effect from satisfaction to place attachment.
