Integrated data management of surgical patients provides efficient perioperative information flow to the healthcare givers. Electronic anesthesia record keeping system(EARK)facilitates intraoperative documentation of anesthesia practice. Our hospital had implemented EARK using computer workstation five years ago. We have been using the hardware for ten years including preliminary test period, and it is time to replace the system. Judging from our five year's experience we have decided to structure an open system to facilitate communication with other systems. Client-server system is suitable for our purpose. Windows NT was used for networking operating system and SQL server was used for relational database using Visual Basic and Visual C^<++> for programming language. Preoperative patient evaluation clinic is involved in the system and preoperative patient information is fed into the server computers. The new system is linked with the hospital information system resulting in interactive information transmission between the two systems. Database for clinical research, quality assurance, billing, effective operating room utilization, cost containment will be attributed to the system.
