    At work, at home, and in some public places, a desktop PC is usually available nowadays. Therefore, it is important for users to be able to play various videos on different PCs smoothly, but the diversity of codec types complicates the situation. Although some mainstream media players can try to download the needed codec automatically, this may fail for average users because installing the codec usually requires administrator privileges to complete, while the user may not be the owner of the PC. We believe an ideal solution should work without users' intervention, and need no special privileges. This paper proposes such a user-friendly, program-transparent solution for Windows-based media players. It runs the media player in a user-mode virtualization environment, and then downloads the needed codec on-the-fly. Because of API (Application Programming Interface) interception, some resource-accessing API calls from the player will be redirected to the downloaded codec resources. Then from the viewpoint of the player, the necessary codec exists locally and it can handle the video smoothly, although neither system registry nor system folders was modified during this process. Besides convenience, the principle of least privilege is maintained and the host system is left clean. This paper completely analyzes the technical issues and presents such a prototype which can work with DirectShow-compatible players. Performance tests show that the overhead is negligible. Moreover, our solution conforms to the Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) mode, which is very promising in the Internet era.

    In this paper, a novel approach, which combines color transformation and dimming synergistically with respect to both power saving and image quality, is proposed for thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT LCDs). This approach adaptively selects an allowable perceptual value that depends on the luminance value of an image (or frame) and dims the backlight based on it. The technique is implemented using an image viewer and a video playback program on an LED backlight unit-based TFT LCD board. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves on average 34.5% and 21.19% power savings for still images and video files, respectively, without affecting the visual quality of the images and with an overhead of 4.09% for video files.

    Virtualization solutions aimed at the consolidation of a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a general-purpose operating system (GPOS) onto the same platform are gaining momentum as high-end embedded systems increase their computation power. Among them, the most extended approach for scheduling both operating systems consists of executing the GPOS only when the RTOS becomes idle. Although this approach can guarantee the real-time performance of the RTOS tasks and interrupt handlers, the responsiveness of GPOS time-sensitive activities is negatively affected when the RTOS contains compute-bound activities executing with low priority. In this paper, we modify a reliable hardware-assisted dual-OS virtualization technique to implement an integrated scheduling architecture where the execution priority level of the GPOS and RTOS activities can be mixed with high granularity. The evaluation results show that the proposed approach is suitable for enhancing the responsiveness of the GPOS time-sensitive activities without compromising the reliability and real-time performance of the RTOS.

    Fluid dynamics applications require a good understanding of the underlying physical phenomena. Therefore, effective procedures are necessary for analyzing and visualizing the various physical fields. Beside interactive and perceptually efficient techniques for visualizing flow fields directly, there is strong demand for methods that uncover hidden flow structures. Some recently developed feature based visual analysis methods are exemplarily presented. Fluid flow data typically are large and often are stored remotely or distributedly. The interactive visual analysis of such large data sets requires new software architectures ─ ideally utilizing emerging Grid standards. We discuss such architectures and report on specific software realizations.

    Record/replay is one essential tool in clouds to provide many capabilities such as fault tolerance, software debugging, and security analysis by recording the execution into a log and replaying it deterministically later on. However, in virtualized environments, the log file increases heavily due to saving a considerable amount of I/O data, finally introducing significant storage costs. To mitigate this problem, this paper proposes RR-Row, a redirect-on-write based virtual machine disk for record/replay scenarios. RR-Row appends the written data into new blocks rather than overwrites the original blocks during normal execution so that all written data are reserved in the disk. In this way, the record system only saves the block id instead of the full content, and the replay system can directly fetch the data from the disk rather than the log, thereby reducing the log size a lot. In addition, we propose several optimizations for improving I/O performance so that it is also suitable for normal execution. We implement RR-Row for QEMU and conduct a set of experiments. The results show that RR-Row reduces the log size by 68% compared to the currently used Raw/QCow2 disk without compromising I/O performance.
