Study on Suction Cup Structure with Adhesion Ability to Rough Surface

Abstract

We proposed a suction cup with a cushion structure in order to adhere to rough surface, which has smaller convex-concaves than the size of the suction cup. By deforming the cushion structure, our suction cup can seal even to a rough surface. 50-mm-diameter suction cups were fabricated by stacking four silicone layers. We fabricated 5-types of suction cup and evaluated adhesion force to a surface with convex of up to 0.252 mm in height. As a result, we could obtained the adhesion force of more than 5 N to a surface with convex of 0.189 mm in height.
