In previous papers, the authors proposed a new technique of experimental identification of a nonlinear beam. The proposed technique requires prior knowledge of the modal functions of the linearized beam, causing inconvenience in some cases. In this paper, a technique free from this requirement is proposed wherein a set of functions are used in place of the modal functions, and they as well as the governing equations are determined simultaneously with the use of the experimetal data. The applicability of the technique is confirmed by numerical simulation and by experiment.
