Bean yellows caused by the Y strain of soybean dwarf virus (SDV-Y) is transmi-tted only by the the foxglove aphid, Amlacorthum solani K. The period of infection of SDV-Y in kidney beans had been located in commercial orchards in the Tokachi district from 1985 to 1987. The period was determined using the two ways that the cultivated kidney beans were covered with a cheesecloth, the covering period was changed and the covering, interval was varied. The greatest period of infection was concentrated in the three weeks from the middle of June to early July, with some infection occurring in the middle to the end of July. The foxglove aphid cannot be grown in kidney beans. The period of infection indicates the period of migration of alate viviparae, and the degree of damage indicates the quantity of migration of alate viviparae.
