Abstract
We reviewed 22 studies and examined the trends and gaps in research on art education at Schools for Special Needs Education for the Physically Challenged. We identified a lack of research on artistic play, crafts, visual media, and art appreciation subjects. Our insights are organized into the following topics: “the significance of Art and Handicraft and Art Studies,” “the state of Activities and Expression,” “setting instructional objectives,” “assessment,” “adjusting and innovating instructional methods,” “attitude and system for instruction and support.” An issue that we recognized in educational practice is the possibility that studentsʼ cognitive abilities that develop in the mid- and long-term are not being evaluated. We also identified areas for future development: construction of a curriculum based on disabilities characteristics and “big ideas,” development of assessment standards that captures mid and long-term changes in abilities and accumulation of assessment materials.
