Abstract
Individuals with limited art experience often find it challenging to interpret abstract painting. According to prior research, meditation followed by action painting (AP) can help clarify creative intentions and intensify emotional responses during art appreciation; however, whether similar benefits arise from other expressive modalities remains unclear. To address this gap, we conducted a field experiment in collaboration with a contemporary art exhibition held at a museum. Data from 55 valid participants were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA. The results indicated that both meditation-plus-AP and meditation-plus-drawing were associated with more positive attitudes toward contemporary art, higher appraisals of participantsʼcreative output, and stronger self-evaluations. Contrary to our hypothesis, AP did not produce larger effects than drawing. Overall, these findings suggest that meditation-integrated drawing practices can activate creative intention and enhance engagement with contemporary art.
