We demonstrated the antiallergic effect of Ecklonia cava Subsp. stolonifera harvested on the coast of Nishinoshima Town and the active compounds (phlorotannins)1). Moreover, the chemical changes of the phlorotannins were found in a dried powder manufacturing2). In this study, we investigated an antiallergic effect of the alga after a removal of phlorotannin. After boiling for approximately 10 h, the treated alga was pulverized using a mill and 80% methanol (80M) extract was obtained from the algal powder. The amount of phlorotannins in the 80M extract was measured using Folin-Denis method. Regarding the extract, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and antiallergic property was investigated. Phlorotannins were not detected in the 80M extract. However, the extract exhibited the DPPH radical scavenging activity and antiallergic property.
