Chicken class II (B-L) genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were analyzed for the patterns of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) following digestion with the restriction endonucleases of Bgl II and Pvu II. The RFLPs were examined using southern blot hybridization. The characterization of B-L genes were compared across eighteen lines and within each B haplotype identified by hemagglutination. The RFLPs digested with Bgl II and Pvu II generated four and six patterns, respectively. Though the chickens having same Bhaplotype irrespective of genetical background showed identical RFLP patterns digested with Bgl II, the different serological B haplotypes (B9 B12 B19 and B32) showed the same RFLP pattern. Added to this, in the RFLPs digested with Pvu II, two patterns were found among the same serological B haplotypes (B9 B15 and B21) . Therefore, identification of the B haplotype using RFLP analysis can further subdivide the B haplotypes.
