Abstract

The “Dr. Nakamura Tetsu Memorial Archive,” an exhibition space that symbolically conveys the achievements of Dr. Nakamura Tetsu (1946-2019), who carried out medical and humanitarian activities in Afghanistan and Pakistan for 35 years and was assassinated in December 2019, opened in March 2021 at Kyushu University’s Central Library. The “Memorial Archive” was conceived under the Kyushu University Project to Pass on Dr. Nakamura’s Aspirations to the Next Generation, which is promoted by Kyushu University. The three pillars of this project are the “Dr. Nakamura Tetsu Memorial Archive,” the “Writings Archive,” which collects, digitizes, preserves, and makes available to the public Dr. Nakamura’s writings and other materials, and the “Dr. Nakamura Tetsu Memorial Lecture Series,” an educational program.
This paper describes the background of the project and the concept of the “Dr. Nakamura Tetsu Memorial Archive,” explores the design of each element, explains how comprehensive design of the “Memorial Archive” interacts with the “Writings Archive” and the “Dr. Nakamura Tetsu Memorial Lecture Series,” and finally discusses the significance of this monumental exhibition space.
