Abstract

In order to maintain traditional Japanese crafts, it is essential to preserve the materials and methods which have been passed from generation to generation. This study focuses on materials in traditional Japanese crafts and aims to generate a synergistic effect through their combination for designing tableware.
From April 2012 to August 2022, the craft named Urushito Glass was designed by combining Joboji Urushi (Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture) and Hagi Glass (Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). It was released in June 2013, and won the Good Design Award in the same year. It was selected for The Wonder 500 in 2016.
New products are created and brought to the market while considering social trends and sales performance. This article reports the creation, exhibition, and sale of products in light of the design direction for the first 10 years of development.
