Utilizing Sugars to Improve the Taste-Effectiveness of Thiourea Derivatives for Use as Rodenticides

In this study, rat's drinking behavior together with electrical responses of the chorda typani nerve to mixtures of sucrose with either thiourea derivatives or QU (quinine hydrochloride) was investigated. The unacceptable taste-effectiveness of QU, THU (thiourea), PU (phenylurea) and UR (urea) to rats was easily masked by the addition of sucrose.Of these chemicals, QU was most effectively masked. The unacceptable taste-effectiveness of TSZ (thiosemicarbazide) and PTU (phenylthiourea) was not modified by the addition of sucrose. The unacceptable taste-effectiveness of ANTU (a-naphythylthiourea) was even more undesirable following the addition of sucrose. Explanation of the physiologic mechanisms of these effects induced by addition of sucrose to QU and thiourea derivatives was not satisfactorily realized on the basis of gustatory nerve responses. The effect of sucrose on the taste-effectiveness of thiourea derivatives varied according to the derivative under examination. PTU, TSZ and ANTU were more acutely toxic to rats than the other thourea derivatives and QU.It is speculated that differences in the effects of sucrose addition to the taste-effectiveness of thiourea derivatives and QU are possibly due to the transmission of gustatory information from the mouth through the chorda tympani nerve as well as to the toxic effects of these chemicals.
